Building A Sustainable Future with Renowned Architect Chris Bosse
Updated 2020-09-19

Chris Bosse is founder of LAVA, Adjunct Professor at UTS, and was a key-designer of the Beijing Watercube. He is recipient of the Emerging Architect (RIBA award) and Perspective's 40 Under 40 for Asia’s rising design stars. His work combines digital workflow, nature’s principles and the latest digital-fabrication technologies to achieve more with less: more architecture with less material, energy, time and cost. He designs sustainable masterplans, eco-office and apartment towers, stadiums and instant installations. LAVA won the international competition for the zero-carbon city-centre of MASDAR UAE and the UN-Zeroprize for ‘reskinning’ an aging icon tower.

Chris headed the third segment of the Live International Masterclass: Creativity & Design event organised by The One Academy in a bid to promote creative learning among the youth especially during these challenging times. He kicked of his session introducing his company LAVA which specialises in architecture that is built around the concept of nature, technology and humankind. Elaborating further, Chris highlighted how architecture has changed over the years in terms of design, structure, production and even the type materials used. “We can create multiple variations and adaptations of the same solutions and interpret it based on performative criteria”, he said.

He also shared on one of his exceptional projects, the Beijing Watercube, the National Aquatics Centre which was built in conjunction with the Olympics. Elaborating on the design process and inspiration for the iconic building, Chris explained the steps taken to bring the architectural wonder to life. When speaking on shaping the future, the award-winning architect emphasised on sustainability playing a key role in architecture. “Our responsibility as architects is to position ourselves in history but with pure thoughts for the future” he stated.

Chris’s advice to reach creative success is to define success for yourself and find out what it means to you. “Find something you are really passionate about and push yourself as hard as you can while you can”, he said. It doesn’t matter what field you are interested in, if you are passionate about it, you will surely reach success. Another key point that was highlighted was having a good attitude and always staying curious.

During the Q&A session, Chris answered the audience questions honestly, speaking about what inspires him, the criteria of a good designer, the industry’s expectations for graduates and also what the future of this field looks like in the years to come. The audience left the session feeling eager and inspired to start their journey to creative success.
