Updated 2020-01-10

The MIID Student Saturday is an annual design competition that seeks outstanding interior design projects produced by students in Malaysia. Organised by the Malaysian Institute of Interior Design, this competition consists of several categories, namely commercial, hospitality, Maica Creative, Waris Performance and Waris Kiosk.

Several students from The One Academy’s School of Interior Design had taken part in this competition and attained an amazing victory. Winning the 1st prize in the commercial design category is Alice Dinh, who wow-ed judges with her project titled ‘Mermaid Melissa Exhibition’. This category involves creating interior designs for commercial spaces such as restaurants, café, retails, gallery, cinema and more with emphasis on design technicalities.

‘Mermaid Melissa Exhibition’ is a temporary exhibition proposal for Mermaid Melissa Organization located at Lake Symphony KLCC, Kuala Lumpur. The project showcases a modern fairy tale world – one that combines fresh, futuristic and unconventional styles. It also symbolizes a dreamily eccentric and playful parallel world where everything is possible.

For the hospitality category surrounding spaces such as hotel, resorts, spa, clubhouse, homeless centres and more, TOA-ian Tham Bing Tian took home the 2nd prize for the project titled ‘Radisson RED’. Radisson RED presents a playful twist on conventional hotel stays, offering hangouts with a casual feel, buzzing social scenes and bold design personality.

The main philosophy of Radisson RED is to connect likeminded people and act as a social hub to connect people around the world. Furthermore, the initial idea of this hotel is to give people the sense of boldness and playfulness. The main keyword of this concept is contradiction, connecting and not to mention playfulness. Therefore, the entire space of this proposed hotel will be having a very bold and playful interior and mood to reflect back to Radisson RED’s identity.

As for the Maica Creative category, participants are required to produce mini sculptural design assembled using excessive material provided by Maica Laminates. The finished product is required to give an interpretation of the WARIS theme and reflect the Outstanding Universal Values (OUVs) of Georgetown, Penang. Lim Chee Yong and Low Yong Sheng of The One Academy Penang won the second prize in this category.

In the Waris Performance category, participants were required to choreograph a contemporary interpretation of Penang’s traditional dances & cultural performances bearing the theme of “the Motion of Penang”. The students of The One Academy Penang presented a sketch and dance titled ‘When Mamak Met Street Performers’ which won the 3rd prize. This performance follows the story of a mamak looking to pull customers to the stall when along comes a knight in silky hanfu to lend a hand. The act resembled a fusion of culture, generation, moves and emotion. The team, consisting of Cheang Mei Theng, Lee Shin Ling, Oo Zhi Wei, Ooi Shi Hooi, Andrea Chng Qian Man, Ng Si Hui and Darren Khoo Sin Zhe from The One Academy Penang, impressed the judges with their hard work and efforts.

Last but not least is the Waris Kiosk category in which participants are to design a small-scale integrated kiosk for preparing & selling the famous Penang Teochew Cendol. The design can include lighting fixture, signage, sculpture, loose items & other related features relating to the activities aforementioned. Also from The One Academy Penang, Bong Yong Sheng, Kee Jin Liang, Tan Fong Ming, Ooi Lee Zhe and Grace The won the 3rd prize with their excellent design.

The One Academy congratulates each and every one of these winners for a job well done and wishes them all the best in their future undertakings.
