Bringing Taiwan Excellence to The One Academy
Updated 2019-07-17

For years, the Taiwan Excellence Award has been bestowed upon outstanding products that offer innovative value encompassing smart technologies, renovation materials, household hardware and other home solutions. Products with a the Taiwan Excellence mark are known to be not only of reliable quality but also of good design and image in a bid to boost their competitiveness in the international market.

Recently, Taiwan Excellence collaborated with The One Academy to bring students an exclusive opportunity to design and showcase their vision of a modern lifestyle using their products. The task given to students was to conceptualise and design a sketch of a fully-furnished space that utilises products from brands awarded the coveted Taiwan Excellence Award. Many had participated and showcased their talent through numerous exciting and engaging designs, and four of The One Academy’s students emerged victorious. Dinh Phuong Thao, Tang Ker Nee, Lai Kok Wei and Cindy Noveli from the school of Interior Architecture and Design put their talents to the test and came out on top!

Dinh Phuong and Tang Ker Nee, who bagged first prize, walked away with an iPad each whereas Lai Kok Wei received a Bluetooth speaker for coming in second. The second runner-up, Cindy Noveli won herself a portable hard disk. When asked about what motivated him to join this competition, Lai Kok Wei said he found out about it through one of the groups organised by the Interior Design faculty, Design Ninja. This group enables students to join numerous competitions and projects in a bid to learn more about trends as well design standards in the industry.

Winning any competition, let alone an international one is no easy feat and definitely brings on a lot of emotions. “I was really happy of course, but I feel that there is still room for me to improve”, said Lai. Similarly, second runner up Cindy Noveli also recalled feeling shocked when she heard she had won and felt happy that she decided to give this competition a go. Cindy’s take on the design followed a modern Scandinavian style of interiors and required many steps of preparation. Tang Ker Nee, on the other hand, spent most of her time looking for inspiration.

When asked about the challenges they faced during the competition, most cited the need to divide their time to work on both assignments on hand as well as the competition to be one of the toughest parts. Another trial faced was using software to produce realistic looking products in their designs. Lai Kok Wei recalled how he had to keep trying over and over until he was satisfied with the appearance of the products. Ensuring that the products were recognisable was vital as they had to incorporate Taiwan Excellence Award-winning items into their interior designs. Their advice to future contestants of this competition is to keep trying, never give up and to always be open to criticism.
