Comic covers are a canvas of bold art styles, expertly dramatized and laid out so well that you know exactly what to look forward to. What is it, if not great designs that present beautiful illustrations that reveal a glimpse of the story that lies within? This interview reveals the man behind the mask; the passionate comic fan turned independent artist whose journey has led him to illustrate some of the world’s most legendary characters.
“When I first started drawing, traditional medium was my tool. Traditional drawing gives me more satisfaction compared to digital pieces.”
A Digital Animation graduate from The One Academy, he emphasises on the importance of mastering traditional drawing as a solid foundation before transitioning to digital art. He goes on to credit artistic masters J.C. Leyendecker and Marc Silvestri as his key influences. Growing up, his love for reading manga comics have also played a part in his art style which is something his fans have noticed and pointed out.
“I've always wanted to become a comic artist ever since I was very young. When I was in secondary school, I joined an art community called DeviantArt. There, I met some talented Malaysian artists who happened to be students from The One Academy, and that's when I decided I wanted to go to an art school.”
Fuelled by nothing other than an unwavering passion for comics and drawing, Kael decided to major in 3D Modelling under the Digital Animation course which led to his extensive knowledge and skill in digital art. Upon graduating, he worked as a game concept artist at Passion Republic where he was given the opportunity to learn from his experienced teammates. He started pursuing traditional drawing again after office hours and eventually fell in love with it.
After leaving the company, he took up different freelance gigs such as card game illustrations, comics, games and novels covers. It was in this brief period where Ngu reconnected with his true calling as an artist and began to develop his distinctive identity, experimenting with different art styles and techniques.
“I participated in a Singapore art exhibition featuring Star Wars characters, and through that show it introduced me to more private collectors who requested me to draw superheroes and it all started from there.”
“I didn't think my skill was too great to begin with, but I spent extra hours and more effort on each piece that I do to exceed the client’s expectations.”
Though his path was anything but easy, his hard work and relentless dedication had given him the motivation to continue doing what he loves. From late nights refining his artworks and taking up several different projects at once, to the thrill of seeing his artwork grace the covers of major titles, Kael has turned his dream into reality.
Now, the talented freelancer works from the comfort of his home studio in Miri, Sarawak where he continues to collaborate with international clients on projects virtually and occasionally takes trips to Comic-Cons around the world to meet fans and editors.
“I’ve been thinking a lot about life lately, and I realized that in the end, the thing that I'm looking for is just to be happy. For everything I work on I make sure it is something I love. You have to enjoy the process and the results even when it sucks.”
He goes on to say that it is okay to question the creative path because every artist experiences moments of doubt. What truly matters is perseverance. Kael himself is the perfect example, transforming an innocent childhood dream of becoming a comic artist into a thriving, exciting career. His journey from a passionate fan to an artist working with industry giants like Marvel and DC is an inspiration to aspiring young artists looking to pursue their dreams.
