The students of School of Interior Architecture & Design, The One Academy, once again proved themselves to be worthy adversaries in the global creative field of design by accumulating 6 top awards in the International Art & Design Competition 2017 in Florence, Italy recently.

The third edition of the art and design competition was organised and hosted by Accademia Riaci, an art and design university. Besides being a reputable institution, its strategic location in Florence makes it desirable as the competition’s host. Sometimes dubbed as a “museum with no roof”, Florence gave birth to the Italian Renaissance where iconic artists such as Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci flourished during the 16th century.

As such, the students of Interior Architecture & Design grasped the timely opportunity to test their knowledge and skills, and gauge their abilities in the international art and design arena by submitting their artworks and projects to one of the major art capitals in the world.

With the competition’s main objective to promote Italian Art and fostering talents in new artists, contestants were required to submit entries that embody the culture of their own countries to accommodate the theme ‘Traditional Costume of Your Country’ which can be expressed in any form of art.

Among the ten competition categories, six Interior Architecture & Design students of The One Academy took part in five, namely Furniture Design, Fashion Design, Painting and Drawing Design, Interior Design and Jewelry Design. When the overall results were announced, the student contestants received many pats on their backs and reveled in their victory.

Under Interior Design category, student Juan Zhi Yang bested his competitors from other countries as the grand prize winner. He uses the ‘Go Green’ concept in his interior designs for a high-end restaurant spaces including the bar, garden, lounge and wine cellar.

Zhi Yang obtains his inspiration for his designs through the surroundings. “I believe that even the most complicated concept and idea can be taken from the simplest thing in life. You can be inspired by the most random thing, be it a piece of broken branch or a used plastic bag,” he said.

Another student who placed second in the same category are is Chong Wei Chen who also provided designs for an upscale restaurant.

The first prize winner in the Fashion Design Category, Daniel Teh Kuan Yon, impressed the panel of judges with his ‘Transformation of Time-Honored’ collection featuring traditional garments of the Malay, Chinese and Indians which have highly influenced each other throughout the course of time. To give an edge to his designs, Daniel transformed the traditional garments in a modern way to give them a fresh perspective while still keeping their unique characteristics that represent Malaysia.

Other students who placed in the prestigious competition are Fan Lip Hoong (second prize) in the Furniture Design Category, Tan Yi Xuan (third prize) in the Jewelry Design Category and Alice Dinh Phuong Thao (third prize) in the Painting and Drawing Design Category.

“This is a really great success for the School of Interior Architecture & Design. I am immensely proud of my students who are able to represent our country in this prestigious international competition,” said Dr. Eric Leong, Head of Interior Architecture & Design School.

An exhibition to display all the winners’ artworks and projects is scheduled to be held in Florence in April 2017. This will provide the winners more exposure to the elite creative community in Europe, along with ensuing opportunities to grow their talents.

“I am glad and proud of it as people from a different place and country will have a chance to look at my winning piece. It is a great chance for me to show my talent to the others and to the world,” Tan feels glad her hard work has paid off.

“I am glad that my winning project will be exhibited in Florence and that I can keep my Vietnamese culture alive and introduce our traditional costume internationally,” Alice said, feeling proud of her Vietnamese roots. She will prepare herself for next year’s competition and strive to get the highest prize.
