Young Malaysian Animators Again Won Awards at PANORAMA Design Challenge
Updated 2011-02-22
19 student teams from Asia Pacific countries competed in the 4-day Autodesk PANORAMA Design Challenge Bootcamp and The One Academy emerged winners with its student final year project Code Red, bagging Animax Extraordinary Award and a top three in the category of 3D Animation.

The competition, co-organised by Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) and world leader in 3D design, engineering and entertainment software, Autodesk Inc., saw over 3000 submissions from ten countries in Asia - Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, South Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore and Taiwan. Participants were mentored by creative industry professionals who imparted valuable skills and coached the students to refine their original submissions for the final judging round.

22-year-old Jarold Sng Koon Shan was the project leader of team Rubberfly on Code Red, who partake in the bootcamp with two other team members Lai Meng Guan and Carson Yim. The 4-day boot camp was fun but challenging at the same time. "The 4-day stay actually comprised of 2 full production days, so we had to work fast, hard and smart. Code Red is about changing the world of fairy tales, primarily Little Red Riding Hood. Many renditions have been done to this classic story, but we wanted something that could challenge the 21st century audience. We pushed the saturation, action and intensity to compete with today’s visual standards," said Jarold.

Jarold added that one of the factors that contribute to their win in the competition was that they were fortunate enough to have an array of mentors from different areas of the industry to give comments and critiques that were practical and effective. "The main challenge is getting the most out of the time we had. Given the short time frame, not much extreme changes can be made and that's where we value the advise given by these mentors who advise us on quick and effective solutions to the animation in terms of editing and timing,"

"My team worked exceptionally hard during the entire length of this project, so I am ever grateful to have such capable and reliable friends to work with. We were going up against very favorable competition, thus bagging 2 awards in one night still left us spellbound," said Jarold, who has since graduated from The One Academy in Digital Animation. Congratulations!
