Understanding the Importance of Mental Health

Recently, students at The One Academy learned to understand the importance of mental health during World Mental Health Day. This humble event was put together by the college, so that students will learn about how serious mental health can be and how to cope with it.

It is important for college students to understand mental health problems and illnesses that are clinically significant patterns of behavior or emotions that are associated with certain level of distress. These sufferings can easily be caused by school, work, social, family or even living independently and away from home which is quite common among students.

At the sharing, a speaker from mental & social care organization BEFRIENDERS Kuala Lumpur, shared with students about Depression and Suicide. The topic was enlightening because it opened up students’ mind, on how serious can depression is, especially when an individual have difficulties coping with normal stress in life or work. Students learned how to cope, not just with themselves, but learned to spot any signs of depression or suicidal tendencies in their friends and loved ones, and when to seek immediate help when situation worsens. Another speaker from the United Nations spoke about refugees in Malaysia, and the emotional difficulties that they are going thru. The speaker also added that there are also programmes and rehabilitation centres that have been set up locally to help foreign individuals cope with stress.

Mental Health is a state of physical, mental and social well-being. When students learned to maintain a good mental health, it is easier for them to realize their goals and dreams as well as cope with stress. At The One Academy, students are not only provided a fruitful education, but are also provided resources that will help them embark on a healthy learning experience while feeling supported, safe and well.
