Academy Award-Winning Production Design Master Doug Chiang

The One Academy and MSC Malaysia has collaborated on a successful effort of organising a prestigious international event that saw over 300 participants attended the professional seminar, featuring academy-award production design master and artist Doug Chiang for the first time in Malaysia.

KUALA LUMPUR - The One Academy and MSC Malaysia has collaborated on a successful effort of organising a prestigious international event that saw over 300 participants attended the professional seminar, featuring academy-award production design master and artist Doug Chiang for the first time in Malaysia.

The event initiate is to foster training and development of local human resources as well as create awareness on the current trends and requirement in the global animation and production design industry.

With more than 20 years of professional involvement in the production of international blockbusters, Doug unveiled to the audience what it takes to become an international production designer through getting behind-the-scenes of his work on international feature films, including a 2-day workshop held at The One Academy, Bandar Sunway.

At the professional seminar, Doug introduced himself and presented on the topic on how to 'Be An Excellent Production Designer' as he took the audience on a visual journey through his career in the industry, starting from a stop motion animator in TV series to becoming an academy award winning artist, production designer and author.

He began his career as a stop motion animator on the Pee Wee's Playhouse TV series. After attending the film school at UCLA, he became a Clio Award-winning Commercial Director for various production houses including Rhythm & Hues. Later, as a Creative Director at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) whose prominent works include a big-budgeted commercial for Malaysian Airlines (MAS), he served as Visual Effects Art Director on films such as "Terminator 2", "Ghost", "The Doors", "The Mask", "Forrest Gump" and "Death Becomes Her". Doug has earned an Academy Award and two British Academy Awards for his work.

In 1995, Doug moved to Lucasfilm, LTD to work as Design Director on the first two Star Wars prequels before forming IceBlink Studios, LLC, his Marin County film-design studio. From 2002 to 2010, he has served as Production Designer on "The Polar Express", "Beowulf", "A Christmas Carol", and "Mars Needs Moms".

During the seminar, the audience learned further about Doug and the production design work he has done for international blockbusters, in which he described as an 'empowering' experience. He encourages the audience "to work outside their comfort zone, because it is where one learns the most." While stressing that doing research is important, Doug also emphasise on the need to retain traditional techniques combined with the knowledge of modern tools and software. At the end of the seminar, a Q&A session was held for the audience to take the opportunity to get more insights from Doug on his vast work experience and breadth of knowledge in the creative industry.

On the following day, a number of 60 participants took part in the 2-day intensive training in the area of production design for feature films where Doug coach them through all the steps of designing a film under his mentorship. Beginning with a demonstration on art technique, he demonstrated on how he tackles certain particular design challenge plus a hands-on session of explaining the process of designing a fictional film with critiques and discussions during the workshop.

The international professional seminar and workshop is one of the many organised seminar events which exemplifies The One Academy's commitment in nurturing a creative pool of designer talents through industry-driven learning approach and opportunities to gain insights from highly experienced experts of the industry through its 'Masters Train Masters' coaching philosophy. Previously, there were already successful seminars held by international speakers including the Pixar Toy Story 3 team, Shawn Kelly, Kyle Balda, Phat Phuong, Nicolas Imhof and Christian L. Scheurer.
