The Artistic Transformation
Updated 2017-01-11

About 118 The One Academy students who are taking up the Digital Animation, Multimedia Design, Advertising and Graphic Design, Fine Arts, ESMOD KL Fashion Design and Illustration courses will soon alight at Riverwalk Village Mall, KL to complete a mural painting in collaboration with the AkzoNobel and Low Yat Group in a mission to give the venue an aesthetic uplift.

Mural paintings are garnering more attention over these recent years, transforming the most ordinary spots into tourist attractions all around the world. In the hands of The One Academy, however, mural paintings become something more meaningful; they are on a mission to transfigure prevalent back lane dumping grounds into a glorious artistic spots that could potentially attract thriving business vendors and even more local and international tourists.

In one of their mural projects themed “Muhibbah; Harmony in Diversity”, The One Academy, collaborates with AkzoNobel, the leading global paints and coatings company and producer of quality paint brand, Dulux; and the Low Yat Group, one of the largest privately owned groups in the country.

Malaysia is known as a multicultural society consisting of Malays, Chinese, Indians and other races living in harmony with one another, thus, enriching our country with a unique diversity of religion, beliefs and cultural practices. As harmony in diversity is a manifestation of the Muhibbah concept, together with their partners, The One Academy is determined to translate this beautiful image into this mural painting project called ‘Mural Painting with AkzoNobel and Low Yat Group’.

This project is aimed to channel more awareness among people the definition of Muhibbah concept as well as the Malaysian culture, meant to represent the Malaysian culture in a form of art that can be enjoyed and appreciated by everyone from all walks of life. The mural painting, which will be located at Riverwalk Village Mall, located at Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah, formerly known as Jalan Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur, is also aspired to transform the venue into an attraction. For The One Academy, this project provides an opportunity for its students to further explore their creativity and talent as an art student besides gaining more experience while, at the same time, strengthen their ties with AkzoNobel and Low Yat Group.

“Our collaboration with The One Academy and AkzoNobel aims to bring positive vibes to create a more patron plus visitor-friendly environment to Riverwalk Village while providing 118 students with a conducive, participatory learning while being a fun platform to express their creative impression of Jalan Ipoh’s heritage and charm, in the spirit of Muhibbah. The commendable efforts of these students to complete a meaningful hand-painted 3D wall mural project on three blocks of shop offices, with a total length of 243 feet in just four days is an achievement to be lauded. This joint initiative is just the beginning and does not end here. We certainly look forward to more collaboration to support students of The One Academy in nurturing creative talents in Malaysia,” said Jennifer Chow, General Manager – Property & Business Development, Low Yat Group.

“It is truly a privilege and an honour to be able to work with The One Academy, Low Yat Group and AkzoNobel on this impactful Community Service Project through the power of art and design. This meaningful first time collaboration among The One Academy, Low Yat Group and AkzoNobel creates an artistic foundation on which to build a cohesive society reflecting the "Muhibbah" spirit of Malaysia. I hoped that this Mural Painting Project will be the starting point for future collaborative endeavors which would transform RiverWalk Village into a creative hub as part of the development of RiverWalk City,” said Fadzilah binti Ahmad, Lecturer of The One Academy – Community Course Service.

The ‘Mural Painting with AkzoNobel, Low Yat Group and Dulux’ is not the only The One Academy’s mural painting project as the creative art college has been, of late, engaged with other organisations to achieve its mission. Its most recent project is a mural painting project held at Jalan Kenari, Puchong in September this year in collaboration with Majlis Perbandaran Subang Jaya (MPSJ).

This creative college sets an example by making it mandatory for its students to give back to the society through art. As such, The One Academy incorporated a Community Service course which is compulsory for 3rd year semester 1 diploma students from the Digital Animation, Multimedia Design, Advertising and Graphic Design, Fine Arts, Fashion Design and Illustration majors. This way, students can have a better understanding what comprises of a community service which also helps them to build their own character while honing their creative skills.

As yet another strategic move by The One Academy to maximise its students’ potential by exposing them to real world projects to gain real life experience, this can only attest to the creative college’s commitment to its effective creative education syllabus since its establishment 25 years ago.
